Jettons are the counters that are used on the European table abacus. Barnard's work - which is still the standard reference work on Jettons - expanded interest in the use of these counters, used on counting boards as the principal mechanical aid to calculation in Europe in the Middle Ages. Smith's lecture approaches the subject from a mathematical perspective.
