拍品資料及來源

This curiously illustrated early Italian mercantile arithmetic went through many editions during the sixteenth century, commencing with the first in c.1515, and "there are few textbooks so influential as this in shaping the subsequent teaching of arithmetic" (Smith). This edition is seemingly unrecorded. The finger reckoning method of Bede is shown, but despite its title the author entirely omits the abacus and counters but covers the new methods of "algorism" (Hindu/Arabic arithmetic). It gives the relative values of most European currencies and also the liquid contents of wine casks of different wine-producing lands.

This edition, "Stampata in Vineggia per Aluise Torti Nel MDXXXV Del Mese De Zenaro", is recorded only by Boncompagni, who provides a reproduction of f.55 verso. His citation is repeated by Essling, p.304 (footnote), and by Van Egmond p.338 ("no copy identified", citing Boncompagni and Essling). The printer Luigi Torti was active at Venice from 1533 to 1547. Van Egmond records another edition as “[Alvise Torti]”, on the authority of Sander 7159; however, it too is unknown to the editors of Edit16.
