"After Oughtred died, Charles Scarborough gathered together this collection of his papers on various subjects. Mainly mathematical in nature, they also deal with mechanics, music of bells and fortification" (Tomash & Williams). From the library of William Molyneux (1656-1698), astronomer and antiquarian, co-founder of the Dublin Philosophical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society (1685), author of Dioptrica nova (1692), a book on a telescopic dial, and papers in the Philosophical Transactions.
Molyneux collected an important library of some 2,000 volumes, in which he customarily entered his signature "Will Molyneux" on the title-pages (ten such volumes collected by John, 3rd Earl of Bute, were sold in these rooms 3-4 July 1961). This book may have been his gift to John Somers, 1st Baron Somers (1651-1716), President of the Royal Society from 1698-1703, whose armorial book plate it also bears. Somers’ library passed in 1716 to his brother-in-law, Sir Joseph Jekyll (1662-1738), after whose death it was sent to auction. It is likely that this is the copy offered in Christopher Cock's sale Catalogue of the valuable library of Sir Joseph Jekyll, 21 January 1740, p.7, as lot 103.
