Montmort’s work on games of chance draws on problems set out in Huygens' treatise De ratiociniis in ludo aleae, and in turn influenced Nicolas Bernoulli, with whom Montmort corresponded, and Abraham de Moivre. The book was first issued in 1708 without illustrations and an uncorrected text.
