HENRY CAVENDISH'S COPY of Leybourn's encyclopaedic work which extends to approximately one thousand pages. Cavendish is described by ODNB as "the outstanding natural philosopher of late eighteenth-century Britain". Upon his death, his library passed to Lord George Cavendish, who gifted it to his nephew, the Sixth Duke of Devonshire. The vast majority of the books remain in the library at Chatsworth (R.A. Harvey, “The Private Library of Henry Cavendish (1731-1810)” in The Library, volume 2, 1980, pp.281-292).
