FIRST EDITION AND THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN LINZ. WITH THE RARE ERRATA LEAF. When Kepler moved to Linz in 1612, where he married for a second time, he produced no astronomical works but he did produce this influential treatise on gauging the volume of wine flasks, inspired by a delivery of wine to his house where the barrels were measured diagonally in length rather than by actual volume. He arranged for a printer to come to Linz but the slow sales of the book resulted in a German language version being published the following year (see lot 312), in an attempt to make it profitable. The Nova stereometria "is generally regarded as one of the significant works in the prehistory of the calculus" (DSB VII, p.300).
