“This… is the first separate treatise on the mystery of numbers to appear in print” (Smith). There is also a chapter on finger-reckoning. Although Renouard is silent on the matter, there are two or more issues of the book. This copy conforms to one in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (4 Eph.astr. 17, digitised), also the copy offered in these rooms in the Honeyman sale (30 April 1979, lot 725), the copy in the Plimpton Collection described by Smith, and the copy described by Fred Schreiber, The Estiennes: an annotated catalogue (New York 1982), no. 19 (now Hanes Collection, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). In another issue, represented by a second copy in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (4 Exeg. 180 m, digitised), the title is reset within a woodcut border (Schreiber no. II), with imprint below: "Venale habetur Parisijs in officina Henrici Stephani chalcographi (ubi impressum est) e regione scholae Decretorum". There are two settings of the initial quire and different states of sheets in quires b and c (press corrections).
