AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY OF THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF ALICE IN THE AUTHOR'S SPECIAL BINDING.

Also included is an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ("CLDodgson") to J.G. Falle noting that the author had been "at my publisher's yesterday" and "thought I might as well get the book for your little girl at once..." He continues by stating he has "a very large collection of photographs (many of them of my own doing) including many portraits of my young friends" and asking if he might purchase a print "if you have ever had a good one taken of your little daughter (a vignette of the head and shoulders would be the best form)..." (4 pages, The Chestnuts, Guildford, 8 August 1869, some folds, spotting and creases). Carroll's diary entry for 21 July 1871 records that "Mr Falle... gave me a photo of his second girl, Albina'.

Albina ("Lily") Falle first met Carroll when the author visited Jersey in April 1884. Joshua G. Falle (1821-1903) was a judge and magistrate of the royal court of Jersey. He and his wife had three children: Rozel (b. 1857), Albina (b. 1859) and Bertram (b. 1860). Edward Wakeling notes that Carroll sent Rozel an inscribed Alice's Adventures in August 1869 (presumably the copy to which Carroll refers in the enclosed autograph letter signed) and Albina an inscribed Looking-Glass at Christmas 1871 (see Lewis Carroll's Diaries, Vol. 6, (Clifford, Herefordshire, 2001), p. 170). The present copy of Under Ground is not recorded by Wakeling in his list of recipients of the book (see Lewis Carroll's Diaries, Vol. 8 (Clifford, Herefordshire, 2004), p. 313).
