Kipling wrote to  F. H. Townsend to thank him for his illustrations in this edition saying, "I have been looking over the illustrations that you did for a story of mine recently published in book form by McMillan and I cannot resist the temptation to thank you for them. They are exactly what I should have wished If I had been an artist." (16 December, 1905)
