The beginning concepts to Apollo are described as early as 1923 with Hermann Oberth’s idea of earth orbit rendezvous to refuel a space ship before the trip to the Moon. Other pivotal events are covered through the 1940s and 50s. Almost daily events are included starting in 1960 with Volume I and end at the last entries of July 1974 in Volume IV. Additional topics include government and industry contractual relations, hardware distinctions, evolution of mission architectures, computer hardware and software, vehicle design, development, fabrication, and test flights of the Apollo spacecraft.

Events around the Apollo 1 fire are covered with the challenges of corrections, redefinitions, and redesign. Operational flights began in 1968 with full coverage of objectives and results. Extensive additional information is found in multiple appendices in each volume.
