Condition

Overall surface extremely smooth, with very slightest crazing of pigment, predominately on the blue coat. Slight irregularly of surface at edges. Two minor flecks in sky near 9 o'clock.

The sitter was born in St Petersburg and served as Finance Minister under Alexander I. He married Princess Varvara Sergeevna Urusova (1751-1831), with whom he had two children and he became Count in 1801. Borovikovsky painted a number of portraits of the family and there is a preparatory sketch for the present work in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.1 1. T.V.
