Original canvas. There are several canvas patches and small repairs to the top half of the reverse. The tacking edges have been covered with tape. Remnants of old adhesive tape are visible along the top and bottom edges. Frame abrasions can be seen along the edges. There are cracks and paint shrinkage in places, most notably to the dark pigment in the upper left quadrant, to the shadow in the lower left and lower right, as well as a few cracks to the dress. The surface is dirty and is covered in a discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals several areas of retouching to the background in the upper left, corresponding to the aforementioned patches; a small area of retouching to the sitter's face, corresponding to a repair visible on the reverse; an area of retouching to the right of the sitter's shoulder, corresponding to a patch visible on the reverse; as well as a few minor scattered areas of retouching elsewhere. Held in a thin gilt wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.
