Condition
The canvas has been lined. There are abrasions along all four edges. There are areas of paint shrinkage, which are mostly restricted to the edges and are not visually distracting. There is a layer of surface dirt. Inspection under UV lights reveals retouching along the top and left edges, to the cheek of the worker on the far right and to the shirt of the worker next to him. There are further spots of retouching in places. Held in a simple wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.

The present lot was one of 25 works exhibited alongside the landmark ‘RUSSIA!’ exhibition at the Guggenheim. Reflections: Socialist Realism and Russian Art explored the ways in which Soviet artists negotiated the boundaries of Socialist Realism, balancing official restrictions with the expression of an individual creative vision.
