Dmitry Prigov
1940-2007
SKY AND SEA
ink and acrylic on nine sheets of paper

Text is integral to much of Dmitry Prigov’s work, and in fact through the 1970s he was known primarily as a poet in Moscow’s artistic and literary circles - his work circulated in 'samizdat' form - before he shifted towards more visual and performative forms of expression. Needless to say, the iconoclastic and highly subversive tone of his art did not sit well with the authorities. The 1988 exhibition at Struve Gallery in Chicago was his first major show. The Hermitage organized a Prigov retrospective in 2011 at the 54th Venice Biennale.
