Leonid Purygin is one of the more enigmatic and unconventional figures of this period. The son of a teacher and director of a toy factory, Purygin became a self-taught artist and a key representative of the ‘Art Brut’ movement. Surrounded by the magical world of toys from early childhood and inspired by Russian folk art, the artist developed a distinctive style populated by fantastic characters. He moved to New York in 1989 where he was represented by Eduard Nakhamkin Gallery.
