Oliver Hill (1887 – 1968) the famed designer known for such important commissions as Claridge’s Hotel, London, is also associated with the design of this rug. It is one of a rare group of zebra patterned rugs which he commissioned from the Nichols Carpet Manufactory in Tientsin, North China, a supplier of Art Deco and western influenced decorative carpets to both Europe and America during the 1920’s to 1940’s.
