Condition

Overall measurements: 128cm across the top, 125cm across the bottom, 256cm the left hand side, 253cm the right hand side. Lovely weave, fine lustrous closely sheared wool, with very good range of colours. Pile generally good overall, varying from 2mm in the borders to areas of 1mm and down to knotbars. There is a dart/tuck in centre of upper field, approximately 20cm in length, two further small tension tucks in the right hand border approximately 12cm in length (level with the upper purple motif of central medallion). There is an irregularly shaped area of re-piling in the green hooked motif above the central octagon (approximately 20 by 12cm at extremeties), extending through the centre and adjacent white repiled. There are perhaps half a dozen smaller areas of re-piling - extraordinarly well done and only vible in certain raking lights. There is a partial repiling to orange cruciform in very centre and 1/3 of central medallion, especially in lower half adn into field. The lower left hand purple motif is mainly repiled and there is some repiling in the other purple motifs. The original purple is oxidised to knotbars. Small scattered spot repiles in the field. Some blacks in small motifs repiled, as probably previously oxidised. This might have been minor old moth damage. Rug otherwise in good condition. There might have been a further outer guard, but now edges have chestnut coloured linen reinforcement which forms the narrow border on the sides on the facing side (and lining completely on reverse). Ends partially missing. Original sidecords not extant. Lovely very fine weave. Gorgeous colour and texture. Colours include very good range of reds, blues, greens and aubergine. An excellent example of the genre, and rare type.

A nearly identical example to this rug is in the collection of the MAK, Vienna, see Volker (2001) pp. 344 & 345, pl. 127. The MAK and present example have only very minor differences, for example the offered lot has four rows of four horizontal hooked guls in the field and the MAK four rows of three; crucially the primary dyes and the border designs of the two works are very similar. There is also another example published in Schürmann (1990) pp. 216 & 217, pl. 76. This rug shares a near identical design and colour palette within the three main Chajli medallions. The primary dyes in the medallions and the field are very similar if interposed, for example the madder dye in the field of the offered lot is in fact the ground colour of the upper and lower medallions of the Schürmann example. Furthermore the curvilinear layout of the flowerheads within the field between the two works is notable and a charming quality.
