applied with sheet scrollwork and coloured beads in Gothic style, engraved with views of cities on the Moselle river, applied with enamel coats of arms and inscribed with verse and a 25th wedding anniversary dedication for Anna Maria Adele Joest and Eugen Rautenstrauch 2 May 1897
Condition
Makers mark and town mark only to base. Very good gauge, nice quality finish. Light wear to gilding in places, especially to rim of base. The cover with one or two missing small teeth to rim. The sheet scroll calyx a little mis-shapen. Enamels in good order. Very nice condition overall.

The arms are those of the cities of Cologne, Trier, Strasbourg and Antwerp. Joseph Brems (1859-1912), was noted for his modern interpretation of ancient craftsmanship. He worked extensively for the Cathedral of Trier, one of the three electoral archbishoprics, whose treasury had been extensively depleted during the French Revolution. Anna Maria Joest (1850-1903), who was born in Cologne, came from a wealthy merchant family. She married Eugen Rautenstrauch (1842-1900) who continued her father’s business of importing animal skins. The Rautenstrauch’s were great collectors themselves and the Rautenstrauch-Joest museum in Cologne houses the ethnological collection of William Joest, Adele’s brother.
