The canvases are lined, the paint surfaces are dirty, and the varnishes discoloured. Landscape with horses: Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching, most notably in 3 concentrated vertical bands along the upper edge (probably repaired tears), the largest approx. 15 x 3 cm. There are additional scattered retouchings, for example in the sky upper right, and in the furthest left horse’s back. There are older, discoloured retouchings which are visible to the naked eye, for example in the foreground lower centre, which are almost impassible to discern underneath the thick varnish under UV light. Landscape with cattle: Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an extensive campaign of retouching in the sky and clouds. There are 3 more concentrated areas, one in the sky upper centre, approx. 5 x 3 cm., one in the belly of the calf lower right, and above the white cow's head. There are older, discoloured retouchings which are visible to the naked eye, for example in the foreground lower centre and lower right, but which are almost impossible to discern underneath the thick varnish under UV light.
