  • 28-36.5 cm., 11-14 1/8 in.
comprising: two mid eighteenth century painted, pierced and carved ivory fans, the first with sticks, guards and paper leaf decorated with chinoiserie ornament surrounding Minerva, the second with floral ornament, the paper leaf painted with Cleopatra's banquet, both probably French; and two later fans, the first of mother of pearl with sticks and guards pierced and gilded with a young gardener and his paramour, the leaf painted with lovers, a milestone inscribed: Droit de passage / pour l'ile de Cythère, the reverse inscribed: Alexandre, and a blond tortoiseshell fan, the guard applied with a gilt royal crown, the silk leaf painted with a snowy donkey ride, the reverse with a fishing boat, its sail inscribed: PAZ Feb. 79

Condition

the first in good condition, missing a small piece of the leaf to the top; the second with some tears to the leaf, one ivory stick cracked and detached, the leaf fully torn on the right side; the third with a few tears, two holes and some wear to the paper leaf; the fourth in good condition.
