A GOLD-MOUNTED HARDSTONE CASKET WITH 9 MATCHING OR ASSOCIATED SEWING AND WRITING IMPLEMENTS, PROBABLY VIENNA, CIRCA 1845 | A gold-mounted hardstone casket with 9 matching or associated sewing and writing implements, probably Vienna, circa 1845

rectangular, formed of lozenge-shaped agate panels, the two-colour mounts with paterae and ribbon-bound reeded border, on claw and ball feet, containing various implements in 18th century taste for sewing and writing, including an openwork coloured gold navette centred by hardstone cameos carved with monogram:LS within pearl-set borders, a matching spool, scissors in plain fitted case and pointer with cabochon terminal, also containing a similar smaller gilt-metal openwork navette set with cabochon malachite and two matching spools and a spur-shaped tatting tool; and with an accompanying note dated 22 October 1847, in fishskin case, 

With an accompanying handwritten note: Donné par ma bonne Mère / le 22 octobre 1847. Veille de mon départ de Vienne'. By family tradition, this casket belonged to Princess Elisabeth of Savoy (1800-1856), daughter of Charles Emmanuel of Savoy, Prince of Carignano and Princess Maria Christina of Saxony. She married Archduke Rainer of Austria in 1820.

The upper right corner of the lid of the casket cracked, the front with two cracked agate panels, one panel slightly loose, the top right panel missing. Two panels on the right side cracked, one loose, the left panel of the back cracked, another one with a small crack. The base with three small chips and two cracks. The pearl-set navette in mint condition, the smaller navette with a small crack to the malachite cabochon only. The pointer and the later spools all in very good condition, the scissors case with very late surface scratches, commensurate with age and use.
