Ernest II (1818-1893) was the elder brother of Prince Albert. He succeeded their father, Ernest I, as Duke in 1844. As her journal recounts, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited his family in Coburg and Gotha towards the end of August 1845, presumably taking this as a gift to his brother.
