Géricault was probably young as he executed this work. Géricault's passion for horses is well-known, be they ridden, alone, outside or in their stable. Breasts, as well as rumps, are subjects the artist particularly appreciated to study. The Musée du Louvre, Paris, keeps a painting slightly larger (38 x 46cm) representing five horses as seen from behind (INV. 4891). We would like to thank Monsieur Philippe Grunchec for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work.

We would like to thank Monsieur Bruno Chenique for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. It will be included in the catalogue raisonné in preparation.
