In 1729, as part of a commission for a series of royal portraits, Zincke was ordered 'to paint the Prince of Wales by the King's appointment'.1
The present work is a variant of his portrait of the Prince, the original of which remains in the Royal Collection (RCIN). Here, the heir to the throne is portrayed wearing the sash and star of the Order of the Garter.
