In this miniature Rosalba has included a pictorial conceit - the portrait being painted by Cupid is supported by a pin which appears to project from the edge of the frame. A similarly sized miniature of a lady dressing her hair with flowers by Rosalba, in a tortoiseshell frame, is in the Cleveland Museum of Art (Edward B. Greene Collection, inv. no. 401203).
