Condition

In overall fine condition. The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. The canvas shows evidence of wear throughout. Some of the craquelure is distracting, for example in the heraldic shield, and in the saints' and upper cherbus' faces. There are visible retouchings throughout, most notably in the cherubs, clouds and sky upper centre and upper right. There are small spots of paint loss scattered throughout, as well as a larger area halfway down St James' white cape. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these, as well as further lines throughout, mostly to reduce the appearance of the craquelure, and along all four edges. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in very good condition.
