Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are some old, visible retouchings to small losses in the background to the left of the sitter’s head, in his hair on the left-hand side, and to an area upper right 2 x 3 cm., as well as to an L-shaped tear 3 x 3 cm. in his proper right shoulder. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick varnish, but reveals the aforementioned retouchings, and possibly an older campaign consisting of spot retouchings around the sitter’s jawline, and white collar. In overall fair condition. Offered in a carved wooden frame with some losses.
