The canvas has a very firm relining. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish discoloured. There is a large 18 x 21 cm. L-shaped repaired tear in the sitters shoulder. Inspection under ultra violet light is impeded by the opaque varnish but appears to reveal little other intervention save for a handful of spot re-touchings in the man's face and scattered around the aforementioned tear.
Offered in a Dutch style ebonised wood frame with ripple decoration and a gilt sight edge, some minor losses.
