Condition

The altarpiece consists of five separate panels, joined together at the back by two large, horizontal battens. The panels are in a remarkably good overall state of preservation. The gilding appears to be original, although there is a little wear in some places and has perhaps been later repaired. The punchwork appears undisturbed. The brushwork and colours, though now dirty and quite discoloured, are very well-preserved. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that the painting would appear to be largely untouched - there are two small recent losses in the panel of Saint James, and other scattered minor losses around the feet of Saint John, and to the Madonna's cloak and throne. The panels are contained within a presumably later series of carved, gilt and painted Gothic arches. All but the central arch are now missing their pinnacles and all but small fragments of the original coloured glass.
