Martin Henig has conducted significant research on the primarily English practice of incorporating ancient Roman intaglios into inscribed medieval settings in the 12th and 13th centuries. These were often referred to as sigillum secreti (secret seal) and used primarily for personal correspondence. For comparable seal matrices, see J. Cherry and M.
