RELIEF WITH THE ASCENSION
together with a smaller partially gilt alabaster relief with the Washing of the Feet, Malines, circa 1600, in a gilt and ebonised wood frame, inscribed: IDH

the Ascension with a letter to the reverse certifying the work was included in the exhibition of 'Sculptures anglaises et malinois d'albâtre' in 1967, signed by Gh. Dervaux; the Washing of the Feet with an extract from Dervaux's exhibition catalogue (op. cit.) explaining the monogram 'IDH'


partially gilt alabaster, in a gilt and ebonised wood frame and velvet lined mount
Ascension: 24 by 19cm., 9½ by 7½in.; 47 by 42cm., 18½ by 16½in. overall
Washing of the Feet: 12.5 by 10cm., 4 7/8  by 3 7/8 in.; 23 by 20cm., 9 by 7 7/8 in. overall

The monogram IDH on the relief with the Washing of the Feet probably stands for Jasper de Hemeler, born 1587 - his name is known from records when he entered the studio of Jean van den Bossche as an apprentice in 1608 (op. cit. p. 58). A relief with the Ascension, similar to the present relief, is illustrated in the same catalogue, fig. 17.
