Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few small losses to the wood, including to the saint’s proper left index finger and to folds of the saint’s boots in two places. There are a few restorations: to the back of the proper left boot, to the lower part of the angel’s scroll and the angel’s proper right hand, and to a part of the terrasse at the front. These restorations have been very professionally done and do not detract from the integrity of the piece. There is stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, including some slightly open splits to front at the saint’s head and torso, to the proper left thigh, and to the terrasse. There are a few minor losses to the wood at the edges of the terrasse, which are probably due to splitting. There is very minor evidence of past worming, in particular to the replaced section and to the edges of the terrasse.

Compare the slanted eyes, small mouth and pilgrim's hat of the present Saint Roch to the same Saint in the 1962 Darmstadt exhibition (op. cit). The positioning of the angel and the flat folds of drapery are further similar. RELATED LITERATURE
