Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is rubbing to the lacquer patina, in particular at the high points. There are a few minor original lacunae, notably to the proper left knee and proper right elbow, as well as original casting fissures, notably to the proper left lower arm and the proper right knee. There is a small area of soldering to the proper left shoulder. There are several small nicks and scratches, including to the figure's back and chest. The base is in very good condition with some very minor chips.

拍品資料及來源

The present bronze exists in a number of versions with subtle differences between each cast - the raised hand sometimes supporting a shell, sometimes holding a candle nozzle. This group of satyrs was first attributed to Severo da Ravenna by Charles Avery in 1981 (Avery and Radcliffe, op. cit., p. 111). Particularly the modelling of the musculature on the back was proven to be a trademark of Severo. In Georges Salmann's article, it is suggested that the present bronze might be the same one that was catalogued as part of the Jacobus de Wilde Collection in 1700, based on engravings which are published in the article.
