Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some stable splitting to the wood throughout, consistent with the material, and notably a slightly open but stable split running vertically through the centre of the group. There are further slightly open splits particularly to the base. There are a few losses, notably to Saint Anne's proper right arm, to the child's proper right arm, a part of his proper left forearm and to a part of his proper right foot. There are a few further minor losses, including to parts of the drapery, to the tips of the virgin's crown, and to the back and bottom edge of the throne. There is very minor evidence of past worming. There is wear to the surface throughout and particularly around the bottom, probably from moisture.

Compare the short, crisp folds and elaborate drapery to a slightly later Virgin and Child, Northern Netherlandish, in Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht (inv. no. ABM bh280). Further comparison, in particular in relation to Saint Anne's headdress, can be made with an Anna Selbdritt in the same museum, inv. no. ABM bh339.  RELATED LITERATURE

A Radiocarbon dating measurement report (ref. no. RCD-9049) prepared by J. Walker of RCD Lockinge, dated 29 January 2018, states that the wood dates between AD 1315 and 1418 (95% confidence interval).
