Condition

Overall the condition of the relief is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few very minor losses, including to some locks of hair, to the proper left side of the face, to the edge of the hat, and to the bottom right corner. The polychromy is likely to have been refreshed, and there appears to be a light varnish to the surface. The relief is mounted on a modern backplate. The modern frame is in very good condition.

拍品資料及來源

This charming relief of Saint Mark with the Lion relates to a set of four figures carved in similarly low relief thought to have come from Upper Swabian Bald Waldsee and given to the circle of Konstanz sculptor Heinrich Iselin (Lichte, op. cit., vol. 2, pp. 134-135, no. 104). Compare the broad features and the partial use of polychromy. An origin in Swabia around 1510 is further indicated by comparisons with the work of the Ulm sculptor Daniel Mauch; a Saint Pantaleon from his workshop exhibits similar slanting eyes (Reinhardt, op. cit., cat. no. 4).
