  • tortoiseshell, inlaid with silver piqué work and mother-of-pearl, mounted on a wood core
  • 17 by 21 by 10.5cm., 6 5/8  by 8¼ by 4 1/8 in.

Condition

Overall, the condition of the casket is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is minor splitting to the tortoiseshell, including some slightly open but stable splits to the back of the casket. There is some discolouration to the tortoiseshell, including to the lid, to the front, and to the right side. There are a few minor losses to the tortoiseshell at the corners. One of the mother-of-pearl squirrels to the front is loose. There are a few small losses to some of the other mother-of-pearl inlay. There is also warping in areas, notably to one of the bears to the right of the lockplate. Some of the mother-of-pearl inlay may have been reattached. There are also several losses to the silver mounts.
