  • tortoiseshell, mounted on a wood core, with silver and gold piqué work, the interior lined with later velvet
  • 14 by 19.5cm., 5½ by 7 5/8 in. 

Condition

Overall the condition of the tortoiseshell is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some stable splitting to the tortoiseshell, consistent with the material, in particular to the front panel around the lockplate. There is a semicircular reattachment or restoration to the lid on the left side. There are a few other minor areas of wear to the lid. There is stable splitting to the wood at the underside of the casket. There is some tarnishing to the metal mounts. The key is lost.
