Condition
Black chalk and gouache on vellum. Edges of the sheet have yellowed and are abraded due to previous mounting. There is a small area of rubbing/abrasion to the right of the sitter's head. There is small purple staining at the left of the sheet, possibly a studio stain. Overall the chalk and gouache remain strong and vibrant. Sold unframed.

This portrait of Cornelia Hessels (1586-1640) belongs to a series of similar works by Thopas, which has been dubbed the ‘Kerckrinck Series,’ and thought to have probably been commissioned by Theodorus Kerckrinck (1638-1693), a grandson of the sitter in the present work. Other drawings from the series; all depicting important Amsterdam citizens, are in the Albertina,1 the Rijksprentenkabinet2 and the Courtauld Institute3 and a further sheet, depicting Cornelia's husband, Godert Kerkrinck, was sold by Sotheby's in 2012,4 and is today in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The designs for the elaborate drawn frames seen on the drawings in this series, and others by Thopas, have sometimes been credited to the silversmith, Jan Lutma, but are likely by Thopas himself.
