The Laren exhibition catalogue says that the figures in this drawing are taken from prints engraved by Cornelis Bloemaert, after Abraham Bloemaert, and the text probably comes from Adriaan Valerius, Nederlantsche Gedenckclanck (Haarlem 1626).  Robert Fucci has kindly informed us that the form of the signature, in calligraphic initials, is not totally dissimilar to that found on certain drawings by Jan van de Velde, but all the same the handling does not seem close enough to retain the old attribution, written on the verso.  There are also certain stylistic similarities with the drawings of Gerrit and Willem de Heer.
