As James Byam Shaw observed, the series of drawings of St. Anthony of Padua holding the Christ Child are perhaps the most charming of Giandomenico's religious subjects. The compositions are often numbered, as here (the highest recorded number is 102), and the scale of the figures varies considerably between the various versions. The series may have been inspired by Giovanni Battista's altarpiece painted for the Spanish church of St. Pascal de Aranjuez, a project on which Giovanni Domenico assisted his father.1
