Condition

Sheet in relatively good condition. Sheet appears thinner at the four corners, where the paper has become more transparent, this is probably due to the sheet once being laid down to another backing. Red chalk remains fairly strong on the recto. Red chalk is vibrant on the verso. Sold mounted. Unframed

We are most grateful to Dr. David Ekserdjian, who has confirmed the attribution to Parmigianino, having seen the drawing in the original.  On stylistic grounds, Dr. Ekserdjian dates the drawing on the recto to the latter part of Parmigianino's career, circa 1530-1540.  He has also pointed out that although there is no clear connection between the present drawing and any of the artist's known painted compositions, Parmigianino did treat the subject of The Baptism of Christ in a painting of 1519, now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. In terms of the handling of the chalk, the drawing on the recto is stylistically comparable with a study of a draped female figure in the Louvre, which is also thought to be a late work.2 1.
