This handsome and engaging drawing belongs to a large group of 93 imaginary head studies, which were originally bound in the same album as Tiepolo's well-known series of studies of the Holy family.  Like the Holy Family series, these were conceived as independent works rather than as preparatory for specific paintings.  Bernard Aikema suggests that they may have been produced as a type of pattern book of motifs to be used in future paintings by the atelier, and specifically by Tiepolo's sons, Domenico and Lorenzo.1
