Condition

Laid down. Light staining and surface dirt throughout. There is a small loss where the paper has bees eaten by silver fish at the level of his leg. Otherwise black chalk remains relatively strong. Sold unframed.

This is a copy after the figure of Zacharias to the right of Andrea del Sarto's Birth of the Baptist, in the Chiostro dello Scalzo, Florence (fig. 1). Sarto was credited for the completion of this fresco on the Feast of San Giovanni, 24 June 1526. Shearman observed that the figure of Zacharias writing is developed from Michelangelo's Haman, in one of the Sistine lunettes.1  1. J. Shearman, Andrea del Sarto, Oxford 1965, vol. II, p. 306, no. 15
