Lamberts’ career as an artist commenced circa 1810, when he began producing topographical drawings, generally depicting some of the quieter neighborhoods of Amsterdam, which he would sell to collectors, who sought out prints and drawings of this subject matter to add to “atlases”. This drawing once belonged to the noted "Atlas of Amsterdam", compiled by Johannes Hermanus Henricus Leonhardt (1833-1904) and, as previously noted, depicts the Reguliersdwarsstraat, which runs beside many of the old coach houses of the large houses on the Herengracht.

Though many of Lamberts’ drawings were executed in monochrome wash, he also sometimes, as here, employed watercolor, resulting in a highly idiosyncratic palette, rich in pink and purple washes.
