We are grateful to Alastair Laing, who on the basis of a digital image has confirmed the attribution to Boucher. Laing also draws comparison between the present work and another, similarly executed, drawing of a Bearded oriental,1 today in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York, suggesting that Boucher may well have used the same model for both drawings. Futhermore Laing suggests a dating for these drawings of circa 1765-67, due to the similarities between them and the heads of the numerous old men that feature in the Preaching of John the Baptist in the Desert2 and St. Peter attempting to walk upon water,3 which date to circa 1764 and 1766 respectively and are both in the Cathedral Church of St. Louis at Versailles. 1. Inv. no. 1931-64-103
