We are indebted to Lucia Tantardini for the following information.  The attribution to Luini was first proposed by Philip Pouncey.  As noted by Giulio Bora in Arte Lombarda, this drawing is most probably related to the heads of the two apostles on the lower left of the Assumption of the Virgin, in the monastery of Santa Maria Assunta, Cairate, a work frescoed by Luini in 1560.  Although in the fresco the order of the heads is reversed and, instead of looking straight ahead, the head on the lower right is foreshortened and looks heavenward.
Bora, and recently Tantardini, have also observed the link between the present sheet and the same heads of the apostles in the Assumption of the Virgin at the Madonna di Campagna, Pallanza, in 1576-77.   A dating to circa 1560 has been proposed by Lucia Tantardini for the present sheet, which will be included in the forthcoming publication: L. Tantardini, Aurelio Luini 1530-1593. The Complete Paintings and Drawings (Rome, ed. Ugo Bozzi).
