Fountains Abbey is situated about thirty miles to the north-west of York. Although brought into ruin by Henry VIII's reformation, it remains one of the greatest monastic sites in Europe. Founded in 1132 by Cistercian monks, in its heyday, the fifteenth century, it was home to 120 monks and 400 lay brethren and servants. The present watercolour, which survives in superb condition, belonged to Paul Emrys-Evans of Peatwood House, Staffordshire. He served as the Member of Parliament for Derby.
