The compass dial and navigation marker at Penpole Point was placed on this site in 1668. Equipped with tools to measure wind direction and time, it was designed to aid the navigation of ships at the confluence of the River Severn and River Avon. In the eighteenth century Penpole Point became a popular public viewpoint and the present watercolour shows elegant figures and a dog enjoying the scene.
