WOERDEN CIRCA 1600 - 1655 PARIS
VIEW OF AN ITALIAN HILLTOP TOWN
Black chalk and grey and brown wash; bears initials in brown ink, lower centre: HSL and attribution in brown ink, verso: H. van. sachtleven 187 by 290 mm
In 1623 Swanevelt went to Paris, on his way to Italy. He was definitely in Rome by 1629, and possibly before, and may have overlapped there with Bartholomäus Breenbergh. Breenbergh's atmospheric drawings of characteristic hilltop towns like this, in particular his views of Bomarzo, are in some ways rather comparable to this appealing landscape. The combination of grey and brown washes that we see here is, though, more typical of Swanevelt.
