Condition

Hinge mounted in two places along the upper edge to a modern mount. There are a number of areas of old creasing and buckling throughout the sheet, some of which is integral to the paper manufacture, while other areas are more recent, notably the lower left corner. There are two small holes to the upper left and upper centre of the sheet and some minor staining to the upper half of the left edge. The wash has very slightly faded, however the image is still reasonably strong.

The present study, although executed in black chalk and brown wash, is stylistically close to a large group of drawings of Character Heads, generally executed in pen and ink and wash by Giambattista, of which the majority date from the period 1753-62.
